Variety and competition between the Web browsers such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Opera, Flock and AOL Explorer cause new protections and new threats. According to the senior threat researcher, Jamz Yaneza, by Trend Micro: „Having a single browser means having a single exploit point". So experts say that the re-emergence of the 'browser wars' between Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera and newcomer Safari is modifying the security landscape. The term "browser wars" is the competition for dominance in the web browser marketplace. So both security advantages and new threats have been created due to the competition between the browsers, along with a newfound variety as attackers and malware adjust to the new landscape. Altogether, in a recent blog posting, Sean Sullivan F-Secure researcher stated that enhancing browser security and an increase in competitiveness is a good thing. Further, the competition brings the vawe of innovation. Therefore, the latest versions both Opera and Firefox have employed new security tools to detect and warn users when known phishing and malware sites are visited in order to keep up with the competition. One of the most significant outposts which Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) has on the internet is its browser, Internet Explorer. So people who visit sites online use the Redmond product for access and movement around the web. Internet Explorer has information on users through the security settings, that consumers are able to set, and "cookies" are used in order to track web behavior which consumers may be viewed and deleted. Altogether, the software stores the user's history of sites they visit. Another Microsoft's main browser competitor is Mozilla. It is also going to present a new version of its product, which could help drive its 18% share of the market even higher. Mozilla's new product will be faster at accessing websites and is going to use less PC processing power. Finally, according to Yaneza it is significant to know what you do with your browser despite the fact that browsers are different. As there is always enough money to be made that there is no matter which browser you use. So more online competition would be a nightmare! However, things are not so good. |
