The internet today is filled with people who are doing bad things online as opposed to good things. The average internet user is going to encounter a virus or problem at some point, and the only way to counteract these risks is to use effective antivirus software. According to Wikipedia antivirus software can be defined as: "Antivirus software are computer programs that attempt to identify, neutralize or eliminate malicious software. The term "antivirus" is used because the earliest examples were designed exclusively to combat computer viruses; however most modern antivirus software is now designed to combat a wide range of threats, including worms, phishing attacks, rootkits, Trojan horses and other malware". The question should be asked as to why people should use antivirus programs? There is an extremely simplistic answer, which is antivirus programs are needed to protect your computer from damages and risks.
Cyber security is a huge problem today and if we take the latest cyberattacks that have reached news headlines; this is evidential proof, that computer security is a huge issue on an international level. We can even go as far as to ask the question: Can cyberattacks on America cause as much damage as 911 did? A computer that is unprotected is a vulnerable computer; there is no doubt about that factor. Every day there are vast amounts of trojans, worms and other forms of malware which are released into cyberspace with the sole purpose of harming your computer. It is actually extremely difficult to avoid a hacker or someone wanting to cause damage to your computer. It is vital to use good and effective antivirus software.
It is a good idea to understand the characteristics associated with malicious code. Some people tend to use the terms viruses, worms and Trojans horses interchangeably.
Malicious code and the unique characteristics that you everybody should know:
- Worms - Worms start by exploiting software vulnerabilities. Once the victim's computer has been infected this worm will try to find and infect the computers of others. Worms can propagate via email, network-based software or web sites.
- Trojan Horses - A Trojan horse program is specific software that claims to be one thing but is rather something else. One of the worst types of Trojan horses is a program that claims that it will rid your computer of viruses but instead introduces viruses onto your computer.
- Viruses - This is a specific type of malicious code. Although it sometimes requires you to do something before your computer is infected. This action could entail opening an email or going to a web page.
There are various important factors to consider with regard to antivirus software:
- What kind of protection does the software offer? It is important to look at the type of protection that the antivirus program offers. Does the software offer protection against worms and Trojan horses?
- Cost is a factor to consider. It is a good idea to consider how much antivirus software will cost you over the life of your usage. Some antivirus software requires that you subscribe to a service and then continuously purchase updates on a regular or yearly basis.
- Compatibility is a definite concern. Is the antivirus program compatible with your current computer and operating system?
- How much of your systems resources does the antivirus program use? Antivirus software is an application just like anything else which means it will use your computers processing power, memory and storage space to function. If you are able to keep this at a minimum this will enable your computer to perform at its peak.
It really is in your best interest to use good and effective antivirus software. You should do some comparisons, speak to some experts and do some additional reading on antivirus software as this will enable you to become a bit more knowledgeable on the subject. Any amount of knowledge is better than nothing and this will enable you to make a wise decision when you decide on the exact antivirus program that you want to use. It is also suggested that you read up online and ask some questions with regard to antivirus software. It is an important concept to know that you need to update your antivirus software on a regular basis. It can thus be said in conclusion: "Computers are incredibly fast, accurate, and stupid; humans are incredibly slow, inaccurate and brilliant; together they are powerful beyond imagination". - Albert Einstein

Programs like Sanboxie will only go so far. Its possible for viruses to jump those "walls" and infect the rest of your system, its just a matter of it being a well programmed virus.
In all:
If your skilled with computers, and dont download from sources you dont trust, and know how to recognize virus ridden sites, go ahead and skip out on Antivirus protection. For sake of preventing problems, new users should always have antivirus, though, I disagree with paying for antivirus... I keep it installed since I get quite a few emails, and I am often connected to large networks.
You don't need an antivirus to be safe when browsing the net.
Have a look at Sandboxie, Defensewall, Geswall, Returnil or similar and throw in a decent backup such an imaging app and you will be far safer than using than using any security app that relies on blacklists or heuristics.
