Peer To Peer File Sharing Causes Security Risks!

In the world today it is very common for people to share files over the internet. It can be said without a doubt that millions of computer users share files online. File sharing enables people to share music, games and various other files quickly and effectively. According to Wikipedia, file sharing can be defined as:"File sharing refers to the providing and receiving of digital files over a network, usually following the peer-to-peer (P2P) model, where the files are stored on and served by personal computers of the users. Most people who engage in file sharing on the Internet both provide (upload) files and receive files (download).P2P file sharing is distinct from file trading in that downloading files from a P2P network does not require uploading, although some networks either provide incentives for uploading such as credits or force the sharing of files being currently downloaded."

The question may be asked as to, what are the requirements to participate in peer to peer (P2P) file sharing? All that is required to participate in P2P file sharing is the installation of specific file sharing software. Some of the software may include but is not limited to Frostwire, Limewire or Ares that literally connects your computer to an informal network of many computers which are running file sharing software. There are lots of free file sharing applications on the internet today. P2P file sharing is extremely convenient and effective although there are various security risks that need to be taken into account.                                                                                 File_sharing_applications..jpg

The security risks associated with peer to peer file sharing:

  • Installation of malicious code - When you use P2P applications it is extremely difficult for an average user to be certain that the source of the files is safe and trustworthy. It is vital to know that specific applications are used by people to transmit malicious code. Incorporated into these files can include viruses, Trojan horses, worms and spyware.
  • Breaking copyright laws - It is extremely important to understand and be able to differentiate between copyrighted and public domain material. If you do not do this, you may get into trouble for breaking copyright laws.
  • The exposure of confidential information - You may be giving people access to all your personal information without even realising it. It is extremely easy for other peer to peer users to trick you into obtaining your information. Some of them may simply ask you for it and can appear to come from reputable companies or organisations. If people obtain your information, you may become a victim of identity theft and phishing attacks.
  • Denial of service - When you download files online you are causing traffic. Due to this traffic you are causing, you may reduce the availability of certain programs on your computer or may even limit your access to the internet.
  • Susceptibility to attack - There are various peer to peer files sharing applications that may require you to open certain ports on your firewall, to transmit files. The scary aspect to bear in mind is that these ports may provide the perfect opportunity for attackers to access your computer, or alternatively may enable them to attack your computer by simply taking advantage of any vulnerability that may exist in the peer to peer application.

Tips to minimise the risks of peer to peer file sharing:                                                 Peer_to_peer_file_sharing..jpg
1. Use and continuously update effective antivirus software.
2. Install or enable a decent firewall.
3. Learn as much as you can about P2P applications.
4. Delete any pirated material.
5. Never store copies of copyrighted files.
6. Always back up files and keep copies.
7. Monitor family peer to peer usage.
8. Always close your connection after you are finished using the software.

In today's online world you can never be too careful. It is a good idea to always make sure you have adequate knowledge on what you are doing online and to do as much additional reading as you can. The same concept needs to be applied to peer to peer file sharing and it is extremely important to take the necessary precautions to safeguard yourself and your computer. It is not worth it to take chances with your computer. In today's world if you take chances with your computer you are taking chances with your life.
