We all love staying in hotels when are we are on vacation and we all love the benefits associated with staying in a good hotel. People whose jobs require them to travel may not enjoy staying at hotels all the time. It is up to the hotel to make certain that all guests feel comfortable and welcome. Each hotel is unique in their own way but in today's world there are many benefits associated with staying in a decent hotel. One of the benefits of the majority of good hotels is high speed internet access. The question that can be asked is how secure are hotel security networks? It has recently been discovered that hotel network security is not as safe as the general public would like to think.

Computer_hotel_security..jpgA study was recently conducted and according to this specific study network security in hotels is not always very safe. Some hotels are said to still use rudimentary hub technology for their networks and these are extremely high risk with regard to hacking. Other hotels have gone a step further and have upgraded to routers or alternatively switches which are said to be more secure. Encryption for Wi-Fi connections is great to have but does not provide any form of prevention against dangerous users intercepting the transmissions of guests. Technology does exist which can help a hotels network security. If any form of damage is done to a guests computer or a guest is a victim of one form of computer crime or another it can potentially be blamed on the hotel for not taking the necessary precautions.

It has officially been found that the vast majority of U.S. hotels are vulnerable to various forms of malicious attacks. It has also been found that these hotels are not as prepared as they should be for a network attack of any kind. It has been stated by a study which was published by Cornell University that these particular hotels are unable to protect their guests from internet security problems. A study of computer networks was done in U.S. hotels and nearly two hundred hotels went through a combination of interviews, surveys and on site testing.

Hotel_security_network..jpgThe study that was done in U.S. hotels have come up with a variety of fascinating conclusions and findings. It was recently discovered that there are lots of hotels who have flaws in their network topology. These flaws open up many opportunities for various types of exploitation by bad users. The main risk involved is guests losing their privacy which is a big issue. No one wants to pay lots of money and still end up with no privacy at all. Wireless networks were tested at nearly forty individual hotels and the findings claim that the majority of networks are vulnerable to attacks.

The solution for hotels is to use Wi-Fi protected Access encryption. This requires a password in order to gain access to the network. This also helps in encrypting all the data which is transmitted. The question may be asked what guests can do in order to safeguard themselves? There is a simple answer which may provide guests with peace of mind. This answer uses a combination of methods to ensure the safety of guests. It can be suggested that guests connect to the net with the usage of a Virtual Private Network. It is also suggested that all guests have updated and effective antivirus protection software as well as a decent firewall. It is vital that hotels start taking the necessary measures in order to ensure the network safety security of their guests.
