The risk of cybercrime is increasing dramatically. Physical crimes are decreasing, while online crimes are increasing. Crimes online seem to be taking over and causing extreme amounts of chaos and concern across the globe. Cybercrime is starting to cause serious concern amongst computer security experts as well. Online theft is now officially costing one trillion dollars per year. This is an extremely alarming amount and is causing huge losses for everyone while it has a negative impact on the economy. Cybercrime according to Wikipedia may be defined as: "Computer crime can broadly be defined as criminal activity involving an information technology infrastructure, including illegal access (unauthorized access), illegal interception (by technical means of non-public transmissions of computer data to, from or within a computer system), data interference (unauthorized damaging, deletion, deterioration, alteration or suppression of computer data), systems interference (interfering with the functioning of a computer system by inputting, transmitting, damaging, deleting, deteriorating, altering or suppressing computer data), misuse of devices, forgery (ID theft), and electronic fraud." The way that cybercrime is occurring is causing a frenzy amongst many computer users around the world. Cybercrime is occurring more frequently and the losses are getting bigger. Big cyber attacks literally are threatening the entire economy. It has allegedly been claimed that, according to computer security experts, in the past year more cybercrime has occurred than in the last five years put together. Cybercriminals are finding more and more vulnerabilities in systems around the world and are able to compromise them to commit cyber crime. Cybercriminals and computer security experts are fighting each other in order to try and achieve their goals. More and more job opportunities are opening up for computer security experts in the IT industry to combat this serious issue. There are not enough people fighting cybercrime and computer security companies are becoming more and more desperate for experienced individuals. The threats of cybercrime destroying our economy is starting to effect the livelihood of certain areas in some countries. The harsh ramifications pertaining to destroyed economies due to cybercrime are going to be horrific. It is very likely that entire global economy will become badly affected and destroyed if matters aren't attended to and dealt with correctly. It is just a matter of time before the world starts taking major strain due to cybercrime. Individual Internet users need to educate themselves so they are able to protect their personal information from cyberthieves. Cybercriminals need to be stopped in their tracks with the aid of computer security experts finding ways to fight cybercrime. More computer security experts are needed in the world that we live in today. People also need to start taking cybercrime seriously and realizing the full extent of what could happen if this isn't dealt with and acknowledged. Internet crime units need to become stronger and more severe. It can thus be quoted in conclusion: "Companies spend millions of dollars on firewalls, encryption and secure access devices, and its money wasted, because none of these measures address the weakest link in the security chain."- Kevin Mitnick |
