On the 6th and 7th of May this year CERT is offering a fantastic Insider Threat Workshop, that will be of extreme benefit to anybody in the computer security industry. This workshop entails presentations and specific interactive tasks, where people are taken through some of the CERT insider threat assessment instrument. This was actually developed at the time with the purpose of enabling companies to assess their insider threat risk. This wonderful assessment goes in-depth with regard to technical, organizational, personal, security as well as process issues. This fantastic workshop will help people to be able to see what steps are needed to be taken in order to manage the insider threat within their company. Now for some history!Do any of you remember the Morris worm? It had extremely alarming effects on the Internet at the time of its occurrence. The general overall perception of computer security and the Internet was impacted by this Morris worm. This worm made computer security history due to the factor that it was literally one of the very first computer worms to be distributed via the Internet. The Morris worm was written by a student by the name of Robert Tappan Morris at Cornwell University in November 1988. The Morris worm caused CERT to come into existence. CERT stands for Computer Emergency Response Team. It was established with the purpose of providing computer security experts with a specific central point in coordinating various responses to big network emergencies that may arise. It is ideally situated at Carnegie Mellon University's Software engineering Institute. They intensely study Internet Security vulnerabilities in a variety of different contexts, making them complete and utter experts in their field. Over the years the role of CERT has expanded dramatically since the Morris worm in 1998.This expansion was obviously much needed due to the increase in the Internet and the number of users. CERT is now also a part of a larger CERT program which does many more wonderful things. CERT is strongly involved with the community, working around the clock in order to better internet security and network survivability. CERT makes regular appearances on the radio, television and various other online media all across the entire globe. One of their main objectives is to analyze the exact state of our internet security and then to share those information, findings and knowledge with the entire internet community that exists. They don't only have the most advanced and best experts in the field of technology but they also have specific artifact analysts who have the difficult task of analyzing malicious code. It is fascinating to know that CERT is actually in the process of developing various tools and specialized training in the field of forensics. The courses that CERT offers are both highly enriching and informative. CERT has a 24 hour hotline and are on call for emergencies during specific hours on weekends and holidays. You can contact the CERT hotline by phone on +1 412-268-7090. Altneratively you could email them at cert@cert.org but if you send sensitive information by email you are nicely asked to encrypt it. You can visit their site for more details.
