Do you remember last year when the Church of Scientology's website was attacked? This cyber attack hit news headlines and was between the Church of Scientology and a specific group of young Internet individuals who went by the name of "Anonymous." At the time of the attack a part of the site went down for the day and was the cause of a mystery, for both Scientology members and Internet users worldwide. The reason that the scientology.org website went down was due to the factor that the website was targeted by a couple of DDoS attacks. Apparently this particular attack was promoted by YouTube videos. It was claimed that the site was actually flooded with the amount of 220mbps of traffic, which was obviously very alarming at the time. It is extremely alarming to know that the goal of a DDoS attack is to literally take over and flood the entire network as well as the resources of the server. The end result is that the users of a specific site or specific online service are denied access. DDoS attacks are very powerful and can cause a great deal of harm; this is of course all dependent on various factors such as the type of attack and how big the attack is. It can be said that DDoS attacks are actually easier to pull off than attempting to gain direct administrative access to a targeted system. Due to this particular reason, DDoS attacks are actually extremely common on the Internet today. The latest news is that a nineteen year old boy recently pleaded guilty to these attacks. He is from New Jersey and his name is Dmitriy Guzner. It is a relief to know the truth behind these attacks, as they caused so many problems at the time and the truth was never discovered. It is wonderful to know that Dmitriy very recently, verbally pleaded guilty to these computer hacking charges. The question that we may all be asking is what are the harsh ramifications going to be for this boy? Dmitriy Guzner at the age of nineteen is facing as it currently stands, a statutory maximum of ten years in jail. Scientology members will be patiently waiting for August as this is when Dmitriy Guzner's sentencing will take place. It will be fascinating to see the outcome of this situation. |

i mean come on!!
A hate crime can not be perpetrated against an organization's website especially when the organization is a cult of greed.
Hurting someone because of his/her misguided, stupid and silly beliefs is a hate crime - not stopping their website from working for a short period of time.
Get a grip. Anyone that believes that L. Ron Hubbard started his cult for other than money is crazy.
This was a hate-crime. Would you be so noncommittal if the hate-crime were against your religion, your political party, or a social cause you fervently espouse?
Some friendly judge will slurp up Guzner's, his lawyer's and his friends' testimonials that "He was just misguided. Don't ruin his life. He's a good kid, really."
All will blindly overlook that this was a hate-crime--per every classical and Federal definition. Were it perpetrated against a more well-known and more influential religion, Guzner would spend the full decade behind bars.
That said, a decade of associating with criminals is guaranteed to ruin any life. I'd give him two years, plus two years probation and public service.
AND a requirement that he make reparations to the scientologists! Hey, fair's fair.
