If I could turn back the hands of time and reverse the clock, I would make sure that all computer security programs and applications were one hundred and fifty percent secure. The reason that I would enforce this so strongly would be to eliminate any possibility of any computer vulnerabilities ever occurring. Unfortunately I can't invent a time machine and turn back the hands of time, so instead I am here to tell you about a vulnerability that has taken place in F-Secure. This vulnerability was discovered within the messaging security gateway of F-Secure. The vulnerability is actually a result of an error in the SMTP turbo module. This only occurs in instances when it is used for the distribution of mail. SMTP stands for simple mail transfer protocol and is an internet standard for email. The impact of this vulnerability is that it may be exploited by malicious individuals in order to bypass security restrictions without any prior authorization. Malicious attackers are also able to make use of affected systems as mail relay with the use of various tampered with SMTP messages. F-Secure provides security as a service for everyone. Their services are geared for individuals, home owners as well as huge companies. They have many products available that provide new opportunities for both businesses as well as consumers. F-Secure also provides its user with a remarkable and easy to use Anti-Virus program. Some of the files which relate to F-Secure Anti-Virus 2009 may include but are not limited to the following: fsaw.exe, fsrw.exe, fsdfw.sys, ieshield.dll, fswsclds.exe as well as fsgk32st.exe. It may be in the interest of user to know that the patch for this vulnerability can actually be automatically installed, or you may be required to wait for administrator's approval. This is all highly dependent upon the specific settings that the system you are operating on has. You may be wondering; exactly which version F-Secure is affected? The version that this vulnerability affects is F-Secure Messaging Security Gateway versions 5.5.x. I would like to quote the following in conclusion:"In theory, one can build secure systems. In theory, theory can be applied to practice but in practice, it can't". - M. Dacier, Eurecom Institute |
