The latest news that has been brought to my attention, from a computer security perspective, pertains to none other than Microsoft. I have some exciting news for you which once again confirms to users, the complete and utter dedication that Microsoft has for customers. According to a security bulletin published last week Friday, Microsoft announced that it would be releasing not one, but two emergency security updates very shortly. These updates are clearly very much needed, and are probably required on a much more serious level than we can actually imagine. This is overtly apparent due to the factor that these security updates are going to be released outside of Microsoft's usual monthly patch cycle. This aspect alone should make us all wonder how bad these vulnerabilities really are and I am sure we can all imagine how bad the risks involved must actually be. The security updates were designed to fix both the alarming vulnerabilities which Microsoft has become aware of. One vulnerability which is very critical, was discovered in Internet Explorer. The files of Internet Explorer 6 include the following: AVIPLAY.EXE, AWK.EXE, BUS.SYS, BYTELOADER.DLL as well as COPYCOMP.EXE.The other vulnerability is moderately critical and was discovered in Microsoft Visual Studio. Some of the files of Visual Studio are: AcmeMenu.js, adamsetup.exe, AEParse.dll, aic.exe as well as analyze.exe. According to a recent statement provided by Microsoft, it has been confirmed that both security bulletins will address one overall issue, but the factor that there are two separate releases is due to an underlying need. According to the statement this underlying need is actually:"to provide the broadest protections possible to customers". This should leave all Microsoft customers not only feeling safe and secure about the products that these vulnerabilities affect but also about all past, present and future Microsoft products in general.
Table 1. Affected Products I now have some good news for some of you. Yes unfortunately this does only pertain to some of you. Microsoft has taken the time to inform its users that if they remain current with the security updates that are provided, then the probabilities are actually very high that they will not be affected by these vulnerabilities. It is suggested that users make use of the updates as soon as they become available. These easy to use updates will be made available to the public from the Microsoft Update, Windows Update as well as the Windows Server Update services. I would like to leave you all with a quote in conclusion: "Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one."-Bill Gates |
