System Restore in Safe Mode is also effective in removing the win32:PUP-gen. To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key when booting computer. Select Safe Mode With Networking. When windows comes up in Safe Mode you will be able to get into System Recovery file(StartAll ProgramsAccessoriesSystem ToolsSystem Restore) and choose a restore point before virus affected computer. You will still need to run anti virus scans in Windows and most importantly a full BOOT scan on boot up to delete the win32:PUP-gen and other associated virus files. If unable to recall date virus infected computer, you may need to use your Recovery Partition (F10 on Boot up) as below, following up with anti virus scans to delete the 'pups'
lynch49 wrote on Jul 25, 2010
Have just repaired this virus on my system. It downloaded with rootKit-gen and froze up windows effectively rendering system unusable. This virus slips in without activating your anti virus software - only activating on your next boot up. It affects some of your System Restore files, gets into your recovery partition and any attached portable hard-drives. It infects a number of .exe files on your system. Best way to rid yourself of this virus is to do a full system recovery. This does not delete personal files - only the system files and operating system, which it fully restores. Because some of your recovery system files are infected, you will need to do full antivirus scans in windows and set your antivirus to do a full BOOT Scan on next bootup. This will allow you to delete the the win32:PUP-gen so that it cannot reactivate when windows activated. I have used Avast Free 5.0594.0 to scan and remove virus files effectively. did not try system restore in safe mode - this may work as effectively, but you will still need to run both windows and specifically BOOT scans to prevent pups reactivating
